Key Points & Things to Keep in Mind Regarding Irrigation & Water Usage

Did you know...For each minute your system is over watering, you are wasting approximately 15 gallons of water. That calculates to approximately 1200 gallons of water wasted per year simply from one extra minute of unnecessary irrigation. Some municipalities assess fines for over watering or watering on the wrong day.

Penalties for Improper Irrigation and Watering (from the Town of Cary's website):

  • Watering on the Incorrect Day: Residential customers who violate the Alternate Day Watering rule receive an oral or written notice. Repeat violations can lead to civil penalties of $100.00 for the first citation, $250.00 for the second, and $500.00 for the third. Non-residential customer fines range from $250.00 - $2000.00.

  • Watering on Impervious Surfaces (sidewalks, driveways, streets, etc.): Violators receive an oral or written notice of violation. Repeated or flagrant "Waste While Watering" violators can receive civil penalties of $100.00 for the first day of the offense, $200.00 for the second day, $300.00 for the third day, and $400.00 per day for each day thereafter.

  • Incorrect Rain Sensor Settings: Violators receive an oral or written notice of violation. Repeat residential violators can receive civil penalties of $100.00 for the first day of the offense, $250.00 for the second day, $500.00 for the third day, and $1000.00 for each day thereafter in which the violation continues. Non-residential customers found in violation of the Rain Sensor Ordinance can receive civil penalties for $250.00 for the first day of the violation, $500.00 for the second day, $1000.00 for the third, and $2000.00 per day for each day thereafter.
